....this is one insane friggin' experience, isn't it, this thing called "being human?" ...absolutely mind-blowing experience to just stare into the void - devoid of both Light & Dark - and ponder to one's self, "..just what the f@ck is going on?" The question without an answer. [But what will be the answer to the human being?]

Strip away things such as "faith," "hope," and "love" and the universe (or whatever it is called) just sits there naked ....and SILENT. To just "be still" and stare outwards into the cosmos or inwards into one's "self" [whatever the f@ck that means] is.... well, there is no word to describe it.

At least we have been fortunate to find this music and these lyrics that provide both a wonderful dis-attraction as well as occassional moments of "in-sight" [regardless if even that insight may be one's own self-delusion....on occassion it can still provide some relief].

How fortunate are we to have discovered this group of musicians and lyricists during our so-called "lifetime"(?) I find it mind-blowing that so many of us were able to experience something as unbelievable as "Terrapin Station" LIVE IN CONCERT!!! [..not that it really matters if you ever saw them "live" or not... just the fact you found them is all that matters...] --- My god, think about it -- think about all the tunes that we have experienced (regardless of whether it was in concert or not) --- it forces me to believe that there is "Something" positive and life-giving behind that void devoid of Light & Dark. Or even that belief is a prime example of my own self-delusion.

...just trying to get through another night; thanks for reading this thing,
--- AshesRising

Ashes-you'll get through plenty of nights because you still want to pose these questions. Avoid organised religion. Good luck, bud.

Isn't organized the jewel of accumulated wisdom of human civilization? Seems like we should hold on to it at all costs.

I wouldn't swallow anything anyone gave me though (anymore).

Fair point -but who's doing the organising? A medieval pope? A 19th century "infallible" pope? Psychotic wife-murderer Henry VIII? Any Islamic fascist imam? That's why I dont trust the buggers.

You might try the prophets and saints, buddha and such.

For summaries, Huston Smith's "The Illustrated World's Religions: A Guide to Our Wisdom Traditions" is good for example and a better experience than his text-only books. His "Forgotten Truth" has an appendix on Stanislav Grof's experiments with LSD but isn't so specific on the religions.

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

(Chorus)

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

(Chorus)

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home

Couldn't help it

"New Potato Caboose"
Words by Robert Petersen, music by Phil Lesh
Copyright Ice Nine Publishing Co., Used by permission.

Last leaf fallen;
Bare earth where green was born.
Black Madonna, two eagles hang against a cloud.

Sun comes up blood red;
Wind yells among the stone.
All graceful instruments are known.
When the windows all are broken
and your love's become a toothless crone,
when the voices of the storm sound like a crowd,
winter morning breaks;
you're all alone.

The eyes are blind,
blue visions are all a seer can own
And touching makes the flesh to cry out loud.
This ground on which the seed of love is sown.
All graceful instruments are known.

amazing stuff, first time i've looked at the lyrics in printed form (i'm not a "lyrics" person), and it immediately struck me that it's a poem made into lyrics (rather than lyrics trying to be poetry); no wonder it's one of my all-time favourite GD songs

Hey Arb and JG: I hope he won't mind me saying this out in public and all, but don't you just think of Ashes as our NewPotatoCabooseSeer? Seriously...I think that in many ways Ashes is a 68 profit coming to grips with what went down 40 yrs later. Visually, I picture Donovan, but with a bit more angst...Every time he posts I want to post lyrics in response. It's the only way to communicate with a soul of his achievement--words of mine just don't seem to cut it.

Yes the annotated lyric site has notes on that.

However, what they printed is Black Madonna - do we know what Robert Petersen actually wrote?

Too bad the Annotated site is no longer updated.

I have no idea what the lyricist originally wrote, but after listening to various performances, there's no doubt in my mind (or ears) what Phil sang.

In particular, and as you probably know, the middle syllable of Madonna rhymes with gone, not with bone.

"what Phil sang" --> "what Bob sang".

Sorry. It won't happen again. This week, anyway.

Above my doorknob seems to make more sense. It conjures up an interesting image for me.

Lying on my back in a room with the door ajar and in my line of site are two eagles just above and to the right of the doorknob. With a blue sky of course.

i used to really trip on the upside down view...

another idea is having a CD made for headphones, with one song or whatever, playing in one ear and something else playin in the other..
leading to the seperation of realities

You must be a "passenger" . . . .

Firefly, can you see me?
Shine on, glowing, brief and brightly
Could you imagine? One summer day,
That same night be on your way

Do you remember? Hearts were too cold
Seasons have frozen us into our souls
People were sayin' the whole world is burning
Ashes have scattered too hard to turn

Upside out or inside down
False alarm, the only game in town
No man's land, the only game in town
Terrible, the only game in town

Passenger, don't you hear me?
Destination seen unclearly.
What is a man deep down inside,
What a raging beast with nothing to hide.

Upside out or inside down
False alarm, the only game in town
No man's land, the only game in town
Terrible, the only game in town

Look it's a mixture of a cowlicker and the klingon commander from next generation!

Sorry, feeling silly.

Thank you ashes, for reminding me of this commonness that we all share which yet separates us. We are individuals that share an energy source, I believe. We all draw from it and use it to create our lives. The most perceptive amongst us can at will travel the paths of energy to and from the source and to and from other entities. Sometimes the separations between us become much shorter, such as during the act of sex, or a Grateful Dead concert, or the simple act of sharing a smile. Wow. Thank You Ashes Rising! Cool, cool stuff.

What a nice thought provoking post!
What comes to mind for me is this: What is it about us (deadheads) that allows or perhaps predisposes us to "channeling" (for lack of a better description) the energy or perhaps emotion out of their music ? Is it there for anyone.. or is there something different about us ? I know plenty of people that grimace and get a strong sense of displeasure at the sound of the Dead. Are we more open spiritually/emotionally and better able to tune into the muse behind the tune ?
I know most of you will know what I am talking about when I say that "just the sound of jerry's riffs.. lets say from a smoking GDTRFB, put a smile on my face that is an outward expression of an inner smile that is pure ecstasy."
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I too am very grateful to have found this and had it be a part of my life. To have been able to spend a good part of my youth vagabonding up and down the east coast with like-spirited folks experiencing The Grateful Dead. Not to mention having it all at my fingertips now to relive it whenever it suits me.
Thank you Ashes for a post that made me feel and think.

Yes

That's all that's left when we strip away those other things you described -- a cosmic Yes.

And yes, like you I feel deeply grateful to have this heritage of GD music available, to regularly remind me that being human is actually much more than it appears to be in mundane hours.

And I am also grateful to have this forum to remind me that there are so many others who have seen what I have seen (even if most of the time we behave like mere mortals under the influence of greed, fear, and desire).
